    Thesis (Ph.D.)-University of Natal, Durban, 2003.A high level of plant mortality on the Bisasar Road landfill, Durban, South Africa initiated an investigation into the primary causes of the mortalities and a search for potentially tolerant plant species. Field studies revealed that volunteer grass growth on cover soils was primarily limited by elevated soil C02, with high soil conductivity and low soil moisture possibly compounding the effect. Cynodon dactylon, the most abundant coloniser of the site appeared to be relatively sensitive to high soil CO2, whilst less common species such as Sporobolis cifricanus and Paspalum Paspoloides appeared to be less sensitive. Further research focused on the high mortality of trees planted on the landfill providing insight into the important variables limiting survival· and the relative differences in performance of 20 tree species. A more rigorous 14-month field experiment was designed and constructed, to assess the performance of 10 of the more promising tree species, the environmental conditions limiting tree growth and the benefit of a deeper layer of better quality topsoil. Some species, such as Barringtonia racemosa, performed relatively well in the field experiment, whilst other species such as Syzygium cordatum, and Harpephyllum caffrom experienced high mortalities and poor growth. The better quality topsoil layer provided little improvement in the performance of the stronger or the weaker species, however significant improvements were recorded for species with relatively intermediate performance. The composition of the soil atmosphere was shown to determine rooting depth. Species that performed better had deeper roots, possibly assisting them in utilising deeper soil moisture reserves. It was concluded that high soil CO2 and low soil O2 levels were the key variables responsible for poor tree survival and growth in this field experiment. A soil fumigation system was designed to provide more control of soil gas concentrations and to experimentally investigate differential species responses and the relative effects of soil CO2 and O2 on tree survival and growth. The apparatus fumigated, for a period of 140 days, the rhizosphere of 80 potted 'tolerant' (Barringtonia racemosa) and 'non tolerant' (Harpephyllum caffrum) trees with 4 treatments consisting of varying combinations of CO2 and 02. The difference in performance of Barringtonia racemosa and Harpephyllum caffrum in the experiment on the landfill was similar to that of the elevated CO2 low O2 fumigation treatment, supporting the premise that landfill gas was the key cause for poor performance of plants. Reduced stomatal conductance and resultant limitations on photosynthesis were found to be indicative of species sensitivity. Low O2 had an additive effect on the impact of elevated CO2 in Harpephyllum caffrum however, even with normal soil O2 levels, 25% soil CO2 had negative growth effects on this sensitive species. Maintenance of plant health and better performance of Barringtonia was attributed to a high inherent level of tissue porosity and aerenchyma.     Metropolitan quantum key distribution with silicon photonics

    Photonic integrated circuits (PICs) provide a compact and stable platform for quantum photonics. Here we demonstrate a silicon photonics quantum key distribution (QKD) transmitter in the first high-speed polarization-based QKD field tests. The systems reach composable secret key rates of 950 kbps in a local test (on a 103.6-m fiber with a total emulated loss of 9.2 dB) and 106 kbps in an intercity metropolitan test (on a 43-km fiber with 16.4 dB loss). Our results represent the highest secret key generation rate for polarization-based QKD experiments at a standard telecom wavelength and demonstrate PICs as a promising, scalable resource for future formation of metropolitan quantum-secure communications networks

    BACKGROUND: Mechanistic models, when combined with pertinent data, can improve our knowledge regarding important molecular and cellular mechanisms found in cancer. These models make the prediction of tissue-level response to drug treatment possible, which can lead to new therapies and improved patient outcomes. Here we present a data-driven multiscale modeling framework to study molecular interactions between cancer, stromal, and immune cells found in the tumor microenvironment. We also develop methods to use molecular data available in The Cancer Genome Atlas to generate sample-specific models of cancer. RESULTS: By combining published models of different cells relevant to pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), we built an agent-based model of the multicellular pancreatic tumor microenvironment, formally describing cell type-specific molecular interactions and cytokine-mediated cell-cell communications. We used an ensemble-based modeling approach to systematically explore how variations in the tumor microenvironment affect the viability of cancer cells. The results suggest that the autocrine loop involving EGF signaling is a key interaction modulator between pancreatic cancer and stellate cells. EGF is also found to be associated with previously described subtypes of PDAC. Moreover, the model allows a systematic exploration of the effect of possible therapeutic perturbations; our simulations suggest that reducing bFGF secretion by stellate cells will have, on average, a positive impact on cancer apoptosis. CONCLUSIONS: The developed framework allows model-driven hypotheses to be generated regarding therapeutically relevant PDAC states with potential molecular and cellular drivers indicating specific intervention strategies

    Radio sources at low Galactic latitudes

    We present high-resolution radio observations of a sample of 65 radio sources at low Galactic latitudes. The sources were all observed at 5 GHz with the Very Large Array A-array. MERLIN observations at 5 GHz of the ultracompact HII region G34.26+0.15 and one of the extragalactic sources, B1857-000, are also presented, as are GMRT observations of HI in the direction of three sources, B1801-203, B1802-196 and B1938+229. These observations were made with the objectives of (i) finding compact components suitable for studying the effects of interstellar scattering at lower frequencies, (ii) identifying high surface-brightness lobes of background radio sources to probe the Galactic magnetic field on different scales via polarization observations, and (iii) searching for young supernova remnants. We discuss the nature of the sources found to have shell or shell-like structure and exhibiting both thermal and non-thermal spectra. Of the remaining sources, B1749-281 is coincident within the positional errors of a known pulsar, not detected earlier at 5 GHz.     High-Performance Silicon Photonic Single-Sideband Modulators for Cold Atom Interferometry

    The most complicated and challenging system within a light-pulse atom interferometer (LPAI) is the laser system, which controls the frequencies and intensities of multiple laser beams over time to configure quantum gravity and inertial sensors. The main function of an LPAI laser system is to perform cold-atom generation and state-selective detection and to generate coherent two-photon process for the light-pulse sequence. Substantial miniaturization and ruggedization of the laser system can be achieved by bringing together most key functions of the laser and optical system onto a photonic integrated circuit (PIC). Here we demonstrate a high-performance silicon photonic carrier-suppressed single-sideband (CS-SSB) modulator PIC with dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulators (DP-MZMs) operating near 1560 nm, which can dynamically shift the frequency of the light for the desired function within the LPAI. Independent RF control of channels in SSB modulator enables the extensive study of imbalances in both the optical and RF phases and amplitudes to simultaneously reach 30 dB carrier suppression and unprecedented 47.8 dB sideband suppression with peak conversion efficiency of -6.846 dB (20.7 %). Using a silicon photonic SSB modulator with time-multiplexed frequency shifting in an LPAI laser system, we demonstrate cold-atom generation, state-selective detection, and the realization of atom interferometer fringes to estimate gravitational acceleration, g9.77±0.01m/s2g \approx 9.77 \pm 0.01 \,\rm{m/s^2}, in a Rubidium (87^{87}Rb) atom system.Comment: 18 pages, 9 figure
